5-card Draw
Based on history, the 5-card stud poker is the oldest poker game ever played. It started during the American Civil War and pressed on until the present time. However, it’s not played as much as before. In fact, it’s no longer included in World Series Poker, though its variant, seven-card stud poker, is. Nevertheless, five-card stud poker is still being played in homes and in some countries in Europe, such as Finland.
Five-card draw is based on the five-card stud poker. However, there’s a difference: players need to draw cards from the deck. As to how they are going to do this, it’s what you’re going to learn today.
The Mechanics of the Game
Five-card draw may initially be difficult for some, even if they’re already familiar with five-card stud poker. However, once you learn the basics, knowing and applying the techniques will be fairly easy.
During the game, all players, from 2 to 8, will be given a set of five cards. They have to be faced-down cards. The remaining cards need to be put away somewhere, away from the players for the time being. Once all cards are being dealt, one at a time, the players will then have to get their cards and look at them, making sure that there will be no one else who can take a peek on them.
Before the betting rounds will begin, the players will then have to do one of the most essential steps in the game: draw the cards. Usually, players are given the privilege t change three of their cards, if that’s the only way to form the best hand. However, there are times when they can get four cards, which happens when they have an ace. This one is designated as the wild card.
What If There Are No More Cards to Play?
Depending on how many players are on the table and how many times they discarded their cards, there’s a huge chance that there will be no more cards left, yet there are still some players that have to be dealt with. What the dealer would usually do is to use the cards that have already been discarded by the other players. No player shall ever receive the card at the most bottom part of the deck. There’s the possibility that someone or a lot of the players have already seen it and use it to their advantage.
Where to Play the Game
Because of the slight complexity of the game, you may want to try your skills in free poker rooms. These are areas in online casinos where you can play five-card draw without using any real money. This way, you don’t end up losing a lot of your money to an unsure game. You can also make use of the no-download poker version if you don’t want the hassle of downloading the software into your PC.
It would be quite difficult for you to find the right online casino, but with due diligence, you’ll definitely going to find one.
