Omaha Hi-Lo
Did you say Omaha? If you’re in North America, then you have to be very specific about it. Unlike other parts of the world, where there is usually one type of Omaha that is being played (Omaha Hi), in North America, there are two. We are referring to Omaha Hi and Omaha Hi/Lo.
The Difference between the Two
The difference is obvious: it’s in the objective of the game. With Omaha Hi, your main point is to come up with the best qualifying high hand for you to get the pot. Omaha Hi/Lo, on the other hand, is a lot more complicated. You don’t only think about the best high hand but also the best possible low hand. The pot will then have to be split between the two, to the one with the highest and the one with the lowest hand.
Yet there are similarities too. Both are played with four hole cards. There are also 5 community cards. Like Texas Holdem, they need to come up with the best possible low or high hand using the cards they have and the community cards. However, with Omaha Hi/Lo, as well as Omaha Hi, they can use any of the two hole cards that they have and combine them with any of the three in the community cards.
Other Terms for Omaha Hi/Lo
If you hear Omaha 8, Omaha Eight or Better, or Hi-Low Split, don’t be confused. They just mean the same thing. They are still referring to Omaha Hi/Lo. This Omaha poker variant, moreover, can be played in different betting limits. You can have the pot limit, no limit, and limit. Before you join the game, make sure that you’re aware of the betting structure. It can have a profound effect on your stake and the pot that you can possibly win.
Why It’s More Popular than Omaha Hi
Compared to Omaha Hi only, Omaha Hi/Lo is more popular. In fact, it’s the one being played in HORSE, a mixture of different poker games. You will also find several no-download poker sites or free poker rooms that are offering more of these than Omaha Hi. There are two possible reasons. First, players will have better chances of getting a portion of the pot (it’s a lot better than getting none). All they need to do is to settle for the high or the lowest qualifying hand. Moreover, there are more players who get to stay in the later part of the game, which then increases the value of the pot.
How to Win the Game
For your hand to qualify for the low pot, you must have cards whose values are not more than 8. There can be some occasions when even 9 qualifies, but it seldom happens. Most of the casinos even find it completely unnecessary. The value of ace can either be the biggest or the smallest, depending on what type of hand you’re trying to form.
Is there a chance that nobody wins the low pot? Yes, there is, if there is no player who has the qualifying hand. If this happens, the one with the highest hand wins all the money in the pot.
